Power and Water celebrates multiple award wins!
An innovative approach to training has reaped rewards for Power and Water, with 4 wins at the 2024 GTNT Awards, including the coveted Host Business of the Year Award.
The awards, which recognise excellence in the apprenticeship and trainee space, took place on Friday, 31 May. Eight Power and Water team members were shortlisted as finalists, and 3 were successful in taking a trophy home.
Power and Water CEO Djuna Pollard said the wins were a fantastic reflection of the innovative approach the corporation has taken to finding, training and retaining apprentices, trainees and graduates.
‘Last year we embarked on a new approach that included changing the way we select our apprentices,’ Mrs Pollard said.
‘It includes inviting shortlisted applicants to an assessment session, which covers group work and individual exercise. This gives us a holistic overview of their problem-solving abilities, resilience, collaboration, and health and safety attitudes.’
Changes also include the introduction of an induction week for graduates, which introduces them to senior leaders, teaches them about the different business units within Power and Water, and helps build rapport and a sense of how they fit into the wider team.
‘As a longstanding partner with GTNT for more than 30 years, together we have been able to support hundreds of people to kick start their first career or realise their ambition to take on the challenges of a new career,’ Mrs Pollard said.
‘We welcome new apprentices and graduates because they bring a fresh perspective to the way we operate.
‘We will continue to build and grow our programs to guide and develop our early careers employees.’
Power and Water has made a commitment to engage at least 8 apprentices, 2 trainees and 2 graduates every year, and the numbers are often higher, with 10 apprentices engaged in January 2024 alone. The corporation now supports 38 apprentices, 13 graduates and 14 trainees across Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
