Upgrades to the Trevor Horman Zone Substation have taken another step forward, with work beginning on the detailed design phase.
Commissioned in 1981 and located on Vanderlin Drive in Berrimah, the ageing infrastructure is more than 40 years old. It needs upgrading to meet a growing demand for power in the Berrimah and Wishart industrial areas.
The $55.3 million upgrade will enhance network security and help maintain a safe and reliable power supply. The 66/11KV zone substation will feature a new control building, 66KV AIS switchyard, 66/11KV power transformers and 11KV switchboard, along with associated switchgear and control and protection equipment.
Darwin-based company ESPEC won the design and construction contract in January 2024. Civil works are expected to begin in August, with construction continuing through to 2026.
The substation is named after long-time Power and Water team member Trevor Horman, who passed away in 2019 after 50 years of service to the industry in the Northern Territory. Holding several key roles over the years, in the 1970s Trevor was part of the team tasked with the mammoth job of rebuilding the Top End’s power network after Cyclone Tracy.
