The only Power and Water employee to have a substation named in his honour, Trevor Horman (OAM) was a force to be reckoned with in the organisation for more than 50 years and played a significant role in rebuilding Darwin after Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

He was a valued mentor to the Power and Water team and, in 2020, the organisation established 2 scholarships to recognise his decades of dedication. Applications for the 2025 intake are open now.

The $25,000 scholarships support female and First Nations engineering students studying at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

Power and Water Acting CEO John Pease said as well as being a tribute to an incredible legacy, the scholarships are helping to build the capacity of the Northern Territory’s workforce.

‘The scholarships are a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the work of Trevor, who was passionate about engineering in the Northern Territory and supported dozens of colleagues as a mentor over the years,’ Mr Pease said.

‘They also support 2 rising engineering stars with skills that are in high demand not only within our own organisation but right across the Territory.’

As well as his work after Cyclone Tracy, Trevor played a pivotal role in managing the construction of Darwin’s city zone substation in 1971 and was heavily involved in advancing the Northern Territory’s capacity to deliver sustainable energy projects.

‘Power and Water acknowledges Trevor’s dedication to the Northern Territory and his colleagues, and we look forward to supporting 2 up-and-coming engineers in his name,’ Mr Pease said.

A visionary engineer, and role model to countless young engineers, Trevor was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for his significant contributions to the Territory. He was honoured at the 2018 Chief Minister’s Awards for his 50 years of Excellence in the Public Service and served as President of the NT Institute of Engineers Australia, contributing extensively to community and heritage projects.

Applications for the Trevor Horman scholarships are open now and will close on 7 March 2025.
