Power and Water Corporation has been celebrated for its role in developing Northern Australia through the provision of natural gas to the Tanami region.
The Corporation won the award in the ‘Developing Northern Australia’ category at the 2019 Chief Minister’s Awards for Excellence in the Public Sector on Friday night.
Working together with Newmont Goldcorp and Northern Territory Government agencies, Power and Water facilitated the development of a gas supply corridor to power the Granites Gold Mine in the Tanami, in addition to exploring the connection of remote communities to natural gas.
The partnership recently culminated in the signing of a 10- year gas supply agreement valued at more than $200 million.
“We are very proud to be recognised for this incredible achievement,” Power and Water Chief Executive Michael Thomson said.
“In addition to supplying the gas, Power and Water actively supported engagement with Traditional Owners to ensure everyone stood to benefit from this transition to natural gas.
“Our gas supply team have worked hard to help make this happen.”
The Tanami gas expansion project has been lauded for its improved power supply reliability, lower energy cost, reduced carbon emissions and reduced road traffic through fewer diesel trucks.
The project has provided the foundation for Newmont to expand their mining operations while also opening up new development opportunities in the region.
Power and Water has more than three decades’ experience in the gas industry and expect this to continue well into the future with a number of new projects in the pipeline.
